Price Gouging?
By CleeShay on 11-21-2008 12:21 PM

I'm on my way to the airport today with my friend who is dropping me off. He decides to just wait until we get close to the airport in order to get gas. Gas in our area varies from  $1.85 to $2.05 give or take a few cents. So, he pulls into a  sunoco gas station near the airport which doesn't have its prices listed on a giant sign or anything. We pull in and see the price for gas at the pump: $4.99 a gallon ($6.19 for premium). We say fuck this and drive around. Turns out, it is the only gas station in a 2-3 mile radius. It's located across from a Hertz rental car (I guess they have the prices that high because people returning cars are usually on a tight schedule and don't have time to hunt for a station).

I ask OT for the following:
1. Confirm this is price gouging?
2. Direct me where to report this, as it's blatantly fucked up. It's a busy gas station btw.

Oh we didn't. But I think there's a difference between a beer at a ball game and a 150% price increase on a gallon of gas because you're the only one near a car rental place

You can put me down in the "i dont get why people complain about this" category. I think a private business should be able to charge whatever the f they want for their product.

If they want to charge $798987234.38 per gallon, then I don't care one bit. They won't make any money obviously, but that's their own problem. You don't have to buy gas there, that's your own decision/choice. Monetary exchanges for products are not forced, they are voluntary.

If it wasn't worth $5/gal to you, then you wouldn't pay for it.

There is no such thing as price gouging.  It's supply and demand. You need something and they have it.  You don't want to pay that much then move on.

/sigh

Since Penn St lost you've had a stick up your ass trying to argue with everyone :)

It's one thing if there are other places around there which you could say "fuck that price, I'll buy somewhere else". However, in this instance, there is not. So people traveling back to the airport MUST pay that price.

exactly...plan ahead imo, have you ever been on a lake..price at gas station 1 mile from the lake $2.50, price of gas if your filling up your boat at a resort $5.50

So you don't find it wrong that the only gas station near the rental car places has a 150% mark up?

Re:Price Gouging? In reply to

Hmmm... why do you keep going back to Penn State losing 3 weeks ago? This is the 2nd time you brought that up when I posted my opinion. I haven't even been on hardly at all since then with work/school/traveling.

I'm the same as I always was. I just give my opinion, I don't argue.

Anyways, like I said, if it wasn't worth $5 to you then you wouldn't pay it. And you said there was another one 2 miles away. So if it's not worth $5 (which it wasn't) then you simply drive 2 miles to the other one, problem solved.

What?!?  I thought there were other gas stations within three miles of the one in question.  Did I miss something?
