Don't call the animal shelter!! They will probably euthanize it. I'd try to find it a home first through Craigslist or by asking family and friends if they know anyone who wants a kitten. You could email a picture of it around to people you know and ask them to pass it on to others. Ask for a small re-homing fee (maybe like $15-20) to make sure you get a legitimate person to adopt the kitten.

Hey thanks everyone for the helpful info and support! Sadly our local animal shelter and surrounding area is full but I am going to try to contact that place autoblomist suggested (great investigative work!)

 Well done on choosing to do the good thing.  Also, congrats on your new cat.  If you have it for more than a day or 2 its not leaving.  That deep down feeling of guilt will start to climb through your belly every time you think about getting rid of it, then when you hear it meow while looking right at you a couple times you'll have a new friend for the next 15-20 years.

Small animals have the power to turn the straightest man into the biggest limp wristed pansy around.  And judging by your watch you seem predisposed to the condition.

All kidding aside you did a very good thing, but I'm betting that you keep it.
