Training sites..
By dropkickthesun on 10-20-2008 3:24 AM

..are bullshit.

You're all smart enough to figure out how to play intelligent, profitable poker on your own. So what if it takes time and effort..that's the point! No one else can truly transform you into a winning poker player -- whether it be in cash games or MTTs. Someone can try, and you might be better off for it in the short-term, but in the long run you have to work on your game day in and day out on your own (time). So what if that means failure in the beginning. That's how people learn -- through trial and error, through practice. Recognize what doesn't work and figure out a better way. Learn from past mistakes you've made. 'Learning the hard way' is the only way to truly learn and better yourself, in all aspects life. And that includes poker. People don't give themseves enough credit. You CAN become a great poker player. All it takes is determination and the will to learn. Why pay money for someone to try and help you improve your game. It's just silly, especially when you come to realize that there are endless resources available to you on the internet that will tell you the exact same thing as poker trainers will. But the best training anyone can get is through playing, through seeing the different situations that arise and trying to fully understand them.

THis is funny.
I wanted to learn how to drive as a kid.  My neighbor smashed up his old man's car 4x when he took it out by himself.  I went and got my license in 1wk. after taking a ride with someone showing me the ropes.
Training sites/vids. coaches etc.,.. I feel are all well worth the $$.  Of course you have to put it into practise... that should just go without saying.  To go headlong blind into something....  why....  if you don't have to??

Dude, trial and error is fine, maybe the best, if youre into highschool, college + have plenty of time to spare - but with guys (like me), who have a five-day job going on (and working for 40+ hours a week) a training site actually makes lots of sense, as I dont have the time to commit 6-8 hours each day, experimenting + trying out stuff...

However, to each his own :-)

Cheers,

beat

I agree. In fact I take that approach to everything. So far it's working out well.

My mixed-martial arts record is 14-122, which is a lot of getting my ass kicked, but I'm getting pretty good now and I never had to pay a teacher I jsut learned from getting my ass kicked and buying some books.

I go to see ten movies a week, and without asking anyone about them or checking the reviews. Two of them are usually good, and I'm getting better at picking them just from the posters and the name.

My goal to dominate the world of competitive chess is moving ahead very slowly. The guys who hire coaches seem to beat me a lot, but I keep hitting the books and I hope to be the first grandmaster in 100 years who has never had a coach.

I'm starting my own computer business and rather than going to college I just bought a computer and broke it. It's been three weeks since I broke it and haven't gotten it figured out yet, but if I ask someone how to fix it I won't learn as much so I'm just trying different things. I wonder what this wire does...

This approach work wonderfully in politics. I'm going to vote for whoever occurs to me, without learning anything about the candidates, and after enough elections I'll probably get good at it.

Forget learning from the best players in the world, this guy is right, just try and figure stuff out for yourself, maybe you'll be incredibly gifted and pass up all the fools who are getting personal instruction with just your own determination and an unlimited bankroll.
